Importance of God’s Word

Read:

  •             Romans 1
  •             Psalm 1

Have you ever had a hot take? Which is an opinion you have that goes against what the majority of people believe. Especially something that you’re really passionate about. I love having a hot take because I love seeing the disgust and the disagreement on peoples face when I tell them that ice cream is overrated, or Liverpool FC is not a good football team. But people can get very passionate about their hot takes and will defend it even when they are outnumbered by everyone else with that opinion. That’s the sort of bravery and shameless delight Paul has for the gospel in verse 16. “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.” Paul is following the line of thinking in Psalm 1 when it says in verse 2 saying “But his delight is in the law of the Lord.”  2 Timothy 3:16&17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This shows that God’s word was inspired by God and will benefit us in our walk with Him. This shows that God’s word is the truth, therefore, we can see that we can take a stand for the gospel for it is God’s word as it has been breathed out by God.

But what now? How can we use God’s word in our everyday lives? Well, we currently live is a world full of evil and I have heard Christians say, “It’s never been as evil than this” or “How can it get much worse?” But actually, if you look back at Romans 1 verse 21-31we can clearly see that things happening there that are happening in today’s world. So, when Paul starts by saying that he is “not ashamed of the Gospel” that’s because the Gospel has been ignored by people in Paul’s day (v21) like we see now adays, people are no longer interested in what God’s word has to say. As a result of this we should adhere to God’s word and keep a close eye on what God’s word says especially on important issues in pursuit of what is truth. We could do this through Bible studies, attending church, having our own devotion time to read God’s word and praying that the Holy Spirit guides us and fills us with the wisdom we need.

But why else should we stay in God’s word? Mainly so that we can live in light and not allow the darkness of the world drift you away. We see in verse 4 of Psalm 1 that the “ungodly are like the chaff which the wind drives away.” This means that they will go wherever the world takes them and believe and be influenced by whatever is popular. We see the same in verse 28 of Romans 1, “as they did not retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to their debased mind, to do those things that are not fitting.” The rest of the chapter talks about the evil the people indulge in from verse 29 to 31. The concluding verse 32 to the chapter finishing with Paul letting these people know that they know the
righteousness of God but are choosing to ignore it. We clearly see pride grow in these people as it says, “those who practice… not only practice but approve of those who do.” This sounds very familiar to our culture today. However, this verse and Psalm 1 verse 6 talk about the judgement that will ultimately come for the ungodly who pursue this path. With the concluding line of Psalm verse 6 being “The way of the ungodly shall perish” and Romans 1 verse 32 saying “that those who practice such things are deserving of death.” This is strong wording but ultimately true which makes it more important tell people the Gospel to keep them off this path.

Now, as believers, Psalm 1 verse 3 we shall be “be like a tree, Planted by rivers of water, That brings fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.” This verse is saying that a believer would be taking in what the Bible is saying to them and allowing themselves to grow in it with help with the Holy Spirit. Letting God’s word influence what you believe and not let the world influence you. As a result, we should be like Paul and be unashamed of God’s word and go out and tell others and have complete confidence in his word will help us grow in our relationship with God.

Dear God, thank you for your word, thank you for the path you have set us on that we can be filled with your glory and righteousness. Fill us each day with your word and let us grow and prosper with it by giving us wisdom to make the right decisions. Grant us strength and give us opportunities to tell others about your amazing grace. Help us stay away from the evil of the world but stay in the light of your love and grace. Amen.
